The Genesis of "The Jewelry of Star Trek"

Updated: May 8

Jewelry of Star Trek series

In a 2015 discussion with Ryan Norbauer, a prop-maker and acquaintance from my MakerSpace life, we explored his work on making Star Trek related props, jewelry and mementos. Soon the potential popped up for creating a book regarding the series' and films' jewelry... As someone who admired the jewelry showcased in the many Star Trek productions, I had initially assumed that a book on the topic would already exist. However, upon further research, it became apparent that no such literature was available.

As a result, I opted to pursue the endeavor of writing one myself. Two things I love combined in a gorgeous book with photos and backstories? Geeky research into "the making of"? I couldn't stop thinking about it.

To begin conducting research for this book, my first step was to attend the Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas in 2015. There I had the opportunity to meet a variety of actors and talk with key people in the world of this deeply loved franchise. In one of these great conversations I was introduced to Maggie Schpak, the chief jewelry creator for Star Trek. Maggie and I became friends and I've been so pleased to hear her stories, see her old workshop in LA, and follow her career.

This convention marked the commencement of my in-depth research into the jewelry featured in the Star Trek productions. Just wait to hear more and follow the book in production!
