Playa Jewel is a living archive honoring jewelry and stories of jewelry collected at Burning Man.
For the past twenty years, at the Burning Man Festival in Black Rock, Nevada, participants of the annual arts festival (called 'Citizens' of the temporary city of Black Rock on the playa), have created jewelry in celebration of their culture. This phenomenon has produced a collection that reflects the art, shared community values, theme camps, volunteer groups, organizational departments, and annual themes of the event. In a Leave-No-Trace event, where the city is built in 7 days and after festival-end the desert restored to its pristine state, jewelry is the trace by which Citizens or 'Burners' continue to celebrate stories in making and gifting. The sought-after jewelry has great cache, is widely collected, and includes pendants, medallions, pins, earrings, and bracelets. Moreover, in accord with the Ten Principles of Burning Man; jewelry is gifted, not sold. This book celebrates the creators of Burning Man; showcasing the breadth and depth of a diverse, beautiful jewelry collection that is comprised of brass castings, silversmithing, hand fabrication, married metals, resin casting, ceramics, glass and goldsmithing.
We invite you to add your own story and photo of jewelry you received, made or gifted.
