Update #16: Processing...

A self published book takes a long time. Here's what's up!

LadyBee, George and I met though 7 design meetings, call outs to contributors for high res photos, tweaking pictures, making sure the layout was exactly the way we wanted it, adding a line here and a picture there. My email box is stuffed with communications back and forth between the three of us.

The Bullet Points

The low res and high res proofs are back at the printers.

Hong Kong is taking a two week break from Feb 10-27 to celebrate "Year of the Goat."

Two - three weeks to print. Shrink wrapped, put in a box and loaded onto a pallet. Two weeks at sea. Another week or more, depending if customs in Oakland have resolved their labor dispute, books are released, first week in May. I meet the books at the dock and move them into storage. Books are signed by all of us and shipped out to you!!!!

We are working on the pendants now and should have them sent out next week to meet our Feb deadline.

The longer story... but a good one.

Recently, I received the copy of the Blue Line low res proof. It's the first opportunity to hold the book in my hand, look for a comma out of place, an extra space or two, and adding italics to a Latin name. The feeling of holding this book for the first time is unreal. It's cut to the right size and the design is solid and beautiful. The proof is now back in the hands of the printer, with little corrections here and there.

A few days later, another box arrived. This one contained the High Res Proof. OMG! It's glossy and rich and the photos are amazing. This copy was sent to George Post, our Image Wrangler. He checks the color balance and makes sure that what he so expertly photographed pops on the page. YUM. This is now back in the printer's hands.

Each pendant has a little sprue that needs to be ground off. My assistant Arlene treats every pendant carefully and readies them for the tumbler.

Once the sprues are ground off, they spin in a tumbler for an hour. This removes the casting skin which makes the pendants SHINY and ready to wear!

After tumbling, they are laid out to dry. Lots of steps!

So there you have it. We are busy and trying our best to make things move as fast as they can. Thank you all for your patience! The book will be worth it. We promise.

Update #15: And it's off.....

Hello Faithful Backers of the Jewelry of Burning Man!

You've been wondering I'm sure, what's going on with that book? I haven't heard anything about it, and you would be right. The Manuscript is at the printers!

September to December was incredibly busy with tracking down tiny photos to higher res ones, adding makers here and there, writing, re writing, and writing again. Our book evolved through 9 design meetings, endless photo wrangling, added captions and new outstanding photos. Our goal was to not just put an endless stream of fabulous photos, but to tell a compelling story of makers and gifters on the desert. We are a team of three authors on two coasts. Technology was challenging, but we got through it. One idea was to release the manuscript in time for Christmas. That would have been an OK book. Even the February deadline was now pushing forward and that would have been a Good book. At the end, we decided to make a GREAT book and that's just what we did. It's about 3 months from proofs to printing, shipping, barring holidays and stormy seas between two continents.

On behalf of LadyBee, George and myself, we could not be prouder of the outcome. In the next few weeks, more regular updates with sneak peeks for JUST YOU GUYS who supported us in the beginning Oh, and those very cool pendants, they are at the casters as I speak. So hang in there, it's coming. Oh, and if you have friends who want to order ahead of the pack, can go here:

Yeah, yeah, it still says Jewelry of the Playa, but that's changing.

So for now, your first Sneak Peek of the front and back cover. More to come next week!

With love and gratitude,

Karen
